Health Systems Impact

Do results of mathematical models and clinical trials bear out in the real world? The Collaborative addressed this question by analyzing real-world data - 11,000,000 encounter records over a six year period - to assess the impact on smoking rates, patient health and costs. It is likely that similar data exist within EHRs in many healthcare organizations across the country and could yield more evidence of how a coordinated system can advance reductions in smoking prevalence and improve the health of diverse patient populations.

Profile of Healthcare Organizations Studied

An analysis has been completed of the impact of systematic tobacco interventions in two large and very different health care delivery systems – Atrius Health serving 350,000 patients in Massachusetts, and LSU Public Hospitals, serving a quarter of the poor population in Louisiana. Both of healthcare organizations have integrated tobacco into EHRs and clinical workflow and have tracked and measured performance with remarkable results.
